Downtown Beds, Main Street

Working with the Village of Nyack and Sustainability Coordinator Marcy Denker, we targeted several underutilized natural spaces along the downtown promenade and filled them with classic native grasses and wildflowers. Our troupe of admirably committed volunteers worked up a sweat as they planted in soil that was largely bare mulch over heavily compacted clay. It was a joy to see these once-naked beds transformed into lush and colorful oases!

We call these small gardens “pollinator pockets.” Pollinators, like all wildlife, are facing a critical shortage of connected green corridors and unfragmented foraging habitat. Yet small pocket gardens like these can still provide sustenance and act as way-stations. Our goal for the Pathway is to plant as much as possible throughout the Nyacks to start “connecting the dots” for our pollinators.
